Why Cosmopolitics?

Welcome to Cosmopolitics.

I’m Elise Labott. I write about America’s role in the world and break down complex international stories by taking you inside global policy debates and introducing you to the players involved.

This reporting-driven newsletter will cut through the talking points and explain what it really means. Call it an insider’s guide to better understanding your world.

A little bit about me: I am a veteran foreign affairs journalist who writes about geopolitics and America’s role in the world. I’m also an Adjunct Professor at American University’s School of International Service. Previously I was CNN’s Global Affairs Correspondent, covering the State Department – a perch from which I covered seven secretaries of state and traveled to more than 100 countries.

Now you can see my commentary on news outlets, such as MSNBC, CBS, NPR, BBC and SiriusXM. You can find my bylines in The Washington Post, POLITICO Magazine, The Guardian and more.

Cosmopolitics is free. It will hit your inboxes and the Substack app on Tuesdays and Fridays at 4p. A premium Cosmopolitics community will live behind the paywall for those who want exclusive content, private chats with Elise and special guests, virtual happy hours to discuss breaking news and world events and a podcast. That will be $5 a month. Founding members can pay more to support this independent work and help us grow.
