Evan Gershkovich's year in a Russian prison, an American foreign service office resigns over the war in Gaza and the China’s Xi Jinping woos American CEOs.
I don't know how I found your Substack (I think it was a recommendation). I have really been enjoying it over the past few weeks and I really appreciate your non partisan voice/work etc. It is very refreshing. Thank you!
This is a great roundup of the news stories that matter most. And introducing some lighter fare is much needed in our “everything is so important” news environment. Great job!
My first read of the day (just woke up!), the Weekly Roundup is a good compilation to start the day, and end the week. I’m on top of the news and there were blurbs on things I missed. And, I read four papers a day and five Substack authors, plus mags!
The link to your piece on Alsu Kurmasheva went to a private article and I could not access. I guess I wasn’t a subscriber yet. Or something.
As always, Elise your writing is impeccable and interesting. I may not always agree with your opinions, but certainly can recognise your integrity and lack of political agenda. I wonder why nobody resigned at State on October 7, when State did not foresee the massacre despite their “understanding “ of what is going on in the world.
That’s kind of you to say, Henry. Given that nobody resigned in Israel because, I’m not surprised about State. And it was more of an intel failure than anything in terms of not foreseeing it - and I think everyone thought, naively so the threat by Hamas was somewhat contained.
And don’t forget a year ago Jake Sullivan was saying the Mideast was the calmest in years. Denial or wishful thinking?

Thanks Craig. Appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed it!
This is wonderful! Thank you for highlighting stories I missed and providing an interesting perspective on some events that I was familiar with.
Glad to hear you found it useful, Lisa!
Enjoyed it. The writing was clear and the copy was informative. Good job.

A fine effort. Thanks
Enjoyed the round up. Thank you.

Thanks Kate! I do strive to approach issues in a nonpartisan way that appreciates diverse opinions and equities, so I am glad that comes across.
